Collection The semen collection procedure is an essential part of the AI program. Carbondale Farms' facilities and equipment permit safe and efficient collection and handling of the semen. Immediately after its collection, the semen is quickly transported to the laboratory, where it is thoroughly evaluated and processed for transportation or insemination. Our well- thought-out, streamlined laboratory allows us to limit any if not all of the harmful exposure of the semen to light, cold or excessive heat. Frozen Semen Carbondale Farms stores frozen semen straws in liquid nitrogen in cryogenic tanks which are similar to large thermos bottles. We carefully monitor the liquid nitrogen level of our tanks to ensure the continued safety of our frozen semen. Carbondale Farms acts as an agent to distribute frozen semen to clients who have contracted to breed to one of our stallions. We also act as a receiving station. Frozen semen may be sent to us and we will store it on site for a specific mare. Semen Shipping Procedures Semen must be ordered by phone. Orders must be received by 8 am PST for same day collections. Orders received after 8 am PST will be processed the following collection day. If you leave a semen order on voice mail, be sure to get confirmation from the farm. Semen will be collected on our breeding days only. Stallions are collected Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Call prior to semen request to verify collection dates. Mare owners must pay the stallion fee in full, shipping fees are specified in the farm's 2006 Schedule of Fees and a $300.00 deposit on the Equitainer in advance. The Equitainer must be returned immediately after removing the cooled semen using the enclosed shipping label. The container deposit will be refunded when the container is returned and the mare is bred for the last time. The Equitainer must be returned after each use. If it is not returned within 48 hours of receipt, a charge of $25.00 per day ($50.00 per day for frozen semen) will be assessed. Carbondale Farms reserves the right to approve all locations where semen will be shipped, and will only ship to those locations which have personnel qualified to handle cooled semen properly. There is a possibility on some collection days that due to the number of mares being bred to a given stallion at the farm, we may not be able to ship cooled semen. Even though we will make every attempt to get cooled semen to your mare in good condition, we will make no guarantees or warranties that the semen will be in good condition upon arrival. If your mare fails to conceive with the use of cooled semen, she will be eligible for a return breeding the following season only and will require an additional booking fee. Frozen Semen Shipping Procedures We strongly recommend shipping frozen semen straws, one at least one week in advance, by two-day economy. This requires appropriate local storage of the frozen straws. Semen must be ordered by phone. Orders must be received 5 days prior to shipment date. If you leave a semen order on voice mail, be sure to get confirmation from the farm. Frozen semen will be shipped on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Call prior to semen request to verify shipment dates. There will be no shipments on Sundays or Holidays. Mare owners must pay the stallion fee in full, a $200.00 shipping fee and a $600.00 deposit on the Vapor Shipper in advance. The Vapor Shipper must be returned immediately after removing the frozen semen using the enclosed shipping label. The container deposit will be refunded when the container is returned and the mare is bred for the last time. The Vapor Shipper must be returned after each use. If it is not returned within 48 hours of receipt, a charge of $50.00 per day will be assessed. Carbondale Farms reserves the right to approve all locations where semen will be shipped, and will only ship to those locations which have personnel qualified to handle frozen semen properly. Even though we will make every attempt to get frozen semen to your mare in good condition, we will make no guarantees or warranties that the semen will be in good condition upon arrival.
